Cloud Computing Medical Records Management
December 27, 2011 | In: Cloud Computing
When you hear the two words “cloud computing”, you may think about a process of computing made from heaven. Actually, this may sound true, because cloud computing can remove large capital expenditure from the consumer’s perspective and gives them the liberty to use the best technology on a rental basis. With the use of cloud computing, every customer will experience easy and effective solutions, because they do not have to worry about organizing and managing large networks of computers and software communications. With the easiness and affectivity that cloud computing can give, the consumer can say that it is really made from heaven. One of the fields that really needs the help of cloud computing is the medical field. It can really help in medical records management of patients within a hospital, clinics, or any medical facilities, where there are huge numbers of medical record from past and previous patients.
With the use of cloud computing, the organization can reduce capital expenditure by renting third party services. Rather than an expensive initial outlay, you only need to pay for the services and resources that you have used. As you all know a medical center serves a lot if people in all walks of life everyday, and there are lots of work that needs to be done like managing appointments and schedules, maintaining patient’s records, accounting, customer relationship management as well as the medical treatment. The medical center can purchase a server, buy multiple software solutions and install networks and implement all of these by having very huge monthly costs. The installation is followed by monthly maintenance costs and the salary of the technical human resources that they needed for the operation of the system. People are needed to fill the positions for support technician, project manager, network engineer, and there are other associated costs.
One way to reduce the cost within the medial center is to hire an Information Technology company by monthly or yearly plan as a software service provider that will provide the web-based emr software solution needed. The complete software solution will be handled by third party servers that can be easily accessed by the medical center with the use of internet. This kind of solution will dramatically reduce the cost to the clinic or hospital to a monthly or yearly charge. The huge capital expenses that the medical center saved can be used for other areas for the betterment of their medical services. The web host solution is referred to as Software as Service or SaaS and the SaaS is a part of cloud computing.
As a whole you can say that in cloud computing, the consumer does not own a physical infrastructure as well as the EMR software application that they use, but they make use of the services by renting it on a monthly or yearly basis from their third party provider. All of the resources that the medical provider needs can be accessed with the use an internet connection to avoid in-house networking costs. Thus, resources are consumed in the form of a service and you will only pay for the resources that you have have used.

Electronic medical records software is great for a lot more reasons than you mentioned above. It stores all of a patient’s info online, so they aren’t filling out paperwork every time they come in, and the doctors don’t have to try and find it. It just makes everything so much more streamlined.
